From Kimbab to Duck Noodle Soup: Working Cross-Culture through Children’s Picture Books, a Case Study from DONKEY Books and Thai Illustrator
Creator's Workshop by Donkey Books

If a foreign author wrote a children's book about Thailand, what would it be about?

Korean author Namju Choi was inspired by the heartwarming experience of adopting a stray dog with her husband in Thailand, leading her to create Duck Noodle Soup. Namju’s tale bridges cultural perspectives, illustrating how different cultures may approach stray animal care in various ways while sharing the universal values of compassion and kindness.

This trilingual book, available in Korean, English, and Thai, came to life through a collaboration with Thai illustrator Pornpot Rodkroh, whose authentic and culturally rich artwork enhances the narrative.

In this session, you'll hear about:
-The Inspiration Behind the Story
-The Power of Cross-Cultural Stories
-Benefits for Young Readers Celebrating Diversity
-The Need for More Multicultural Books

Namju and Pornpot will also share insights into their collaborative process, providing valuable perspectives for illustrators interested in working with international publishers.
